Artist's Comments

Well.. firstly.. my reasons for the peice:

I was browsing dA a lot today, more-so than usual. I saw hundreds of works from loads of different artists.
Now, before I say this, and I say it with care, some of the stuff submitted to deviantART is just so pointlessly crap. People submit works with anything in it like 'oh ill take a picture of building, and it's art!'. It's just annoying.
However, yes, some artists feel this is their way of putting themselves across to the world, and they spend time doing it, and yes, sometimes its alright.. but, I just felt the need to say that I do not believe this to be art.

I feel that art is something else, composition, colour, light, beauty, yes they all contribute, and many conventional artists will say that all of these placed in to one peice is ART. I don't think this is the case either.. art is something you see of beauty in an object, or a scene or and animal, and it is how you capture that moment, the picture could be in black and white, sepia, or over-saturated, its the moment that you capture that is the art, it is the momento, the memory, the actual object/animal/scene etc.. that you capture that MAKES the art.

So i ask you to look around dA at some of the submissions, and sometimes what you are about to submit, or have submitted. Do this and ask yourselves...

ART?

fair point.. but there is a beauty to the artist, would you not agree?
otherwise.. what would be the point in the artist creating the peice, if it wasnt good in some way to them?

I would definatly agree with you in the fact that I see alot of crap on here as well but at times i have to remind myself that as artists we are all evolving. I look back at my work from 10-20 years ago and realize the pieces I thought were awesome then are really very unimpressive. I hope that in the future I will get better than I am today, but I never want to forget that at the time I put my all into something. I think we should all remeber that we are all learning and evolving and not to be so criticle that we forget some people are not at the same stage as us.

i could not agree more with you..
however, im not talking of works that i find unimpressive, i think that each artist is that his/her own stage, and yes, they may not be as good as I am or you are, but they will progress. I am talking about peices which are basically shit. I was looking at something in the Digital Art section just after i wrote this (I was looking to see where abouts this was on the main page :p) and it was some peice that was done on paint by what looked like a 3 year old having a fit, with a comment by the original artist saying something like 'nobody comments my works' i was about to comment, but I felt as though I shouldn't as I would not be seen to be a 'welcoming' member of the community.

My basic point is that works which are pointless and basically there because someone thinks 'oh, it has different contrasts', or 'oh, its a bit run down this building, its art'. It isn't, thats the point I'm getting at

I see where your coming from. I know at times I wonder how you can call some expressionistic abstract work art. Like I saw a deviant that some one put up and it was splatters from thier bloody nose on a piece of paper or another guy who just had random brush strokes on a piece of paper. It looked like something I would have wiped my brush on when trying to clean a color out of it. I think...really how much thought, passion, or creativness went into that? Then at other times i respect the work that goes into creating something extreamly simple that catches the eye and holds it attention. Anyways I am glad that we share the same thougts on art. Keep up the good work.

Yes, this is what I am getting at, and I agree with you entirely. Simple works are often the best, and you think 'wow, it's so simple, yet its really good' and others are just mindless garbage that people pump out in order to say 'I have created art' when in fact, they haven't. I'm glad we share these views, and thankyou for your comments.
